Course modules
The current course page lists seven core modules, totalling 180 credits. 1. Evidence Based Medicine — 20 credits Module code: MD7001 This module develops your ability to find, critically analyse and evaluate research and apply evidence-based medicine. Main areas include: • scientific research and methods of enquiry • analytical, descriptive, experimental and qualitative research • sampling and measurement • research and data-collection methods • critical appraisal of primary and secondary literature • research ethics and confidentiality • development of research questions • literature searching and evaluation • statistical concepts and interpretation • development of a research project 2. Analysis and Interpretation of Clinical Data — 20 credits Module code: MD7002 This module covers analytical and molecular techniques relevant to biomedical and molecular laboratory science. It includes: • sample collection, transport and storage • assay development • method validation • precision, accuracy, specificity and sensitivity • quality control • SOPs and COSHH • risk assessment • data recording and statistical analysis • interpretation of reference values Techniques may include: • gel electrophoresis • Western blotting • flow cytometry • PCR and other molecular biology techniques • immunoassays such as ELISA • histology and microscopy • cell culture • bacterial culture • cell-counting techniques 3. Clinical Medicine — 20 credits Module code: MD7003 This module examines the patient journey through the NHS, particularly how diagnostic procedures influence treatment decisions. It uses a precision-medicine approach, following the pathway from initial presentation and symptoms through diagnosis and treatment. The diseases/pathology studied are tailored to the programme, in this case haematology. 4. Blood Sciences — 20 credits Module code: MD7005 This module focuses on laboratory investigations used to diagnose and manage patients. It covers investigations from: • haematology • coagulation • transfusion • biochemistry It also covers Haemato-oncology Diagnostic Service (HODS) areas, including: • immunophenotyping • molecular investigations Conditions discussed include: • haematological malignancies • non-malignant haematological disorders • renal disorders • liver disease • clinical disorders of lipid metabolism 5. Therapeutic Advances in Treating Haematological Problems — 20 credits Module code: MD7022 This module examines treatments for different haematological disorders and the evidence supporting treatment decisions. Topics can include: • UK standards and guidelines for haematological treatment • blood-transfusion and bone-marrow guidelines • haemostasis and its monitoring • bone-marrow transplantation • diagnosis and treatment of anaemias • diagnosis and treatment of blood cancers • platelet disorders • plasma disorders • novel haematological therapies 6. Clinical Research Methods and Biostatistics — 20 credits Module code: MD7123 This module prepares you for conducting and analysing scientific research. It covers: • scientific research • research and data collection methods • research ethics • SPSS and/or other statistical software • types of data • parametric and non-parametric tests • dependent and independent variables • P-value interpretation • selection of appropriate statistical tests • descriptive and experimental data analysis • sample-size and power calculations • meta-analysis • survival analysis • hazard ratios • odds ratios • relative risk • research-project development 7. Research Dissertation — 60 credits Module code: MD7100 This is the largest module and the final research component. You undertake a research project relevant to haematology and your interests. The university says the results are presented as: • a research article in a format suitable for submission to a journal • an oral presentation The dissertation topic is agreed with an appropriate supervisor and can relate to an area relevant to the programme. Total credits 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 60 = 180 credits
